Getting Started with Financial Planning
Although each planning engagement varies depending on the client’s needs, they tend to follow a process similar to the one outlined below:
- You fill out and submit the Introductory Questionnaire. We review the questionnaire together and discuss any questions, goals, or expectations you might have. This conversation allows us to determine how we can work together to meet your needs.
- Based on our conversation I provide you with a fee proposal. If you accept my proposal, we sign an Agreement and you pay a portion of the fee (either 50% or $500, whichever is less).
You use my detailed data collection form and document request list to provide me with information about your financial situation including income, expenses, investments, debts, and insurance. - Once I receive your detailed information, I begin my analysis. During the analysis process we communicate periodically to clarify information, confirm assumptions and discuss alternative approaches to different issues.
- You receive a written financial plan with specific recommendations addressing your priorities. Most plans cover cash flow, net worth, taxes, insurance, asset allocation, retirement planning, and estate considerations. See a sample plan.
- We review your plan together and discuss alternative scenarios. Once we have reviewed your plan, you pay the balance of your fee.
- We discuss whether you would like additional assistance to implement your plan or manage your investments. Additional services are provided under a separate agreement.
